Data volumes in healthcare are growing faster than in any other industry. According to statistics, a single patient can generate up to 80 MB of data annually. This makes it essential to use reliable data solutions and robust infrastructure that ensure fast, seamless access to information and enable timely, secure delivery of healthcare.
Initial Situation
Although the data center and related technical infrastructure at the University Hospital – St. Michael’s Hospital were adequate at the time of their initial deployment, over time they became outdated. Hardware reached the end of its lifecycle, and vendor support was no longer available.
The infrastructure required a modern approach: separating file data from virtualization block data and storing them in a storage system designed specifically for this purpose. A new solution was needed to meet strict requirements for patient data availability and fast recovery in the event of an outage.
Solution Design
IXPERTA delivered two interconnected projects at the hospital:
- Replacement of file data storage and virtualization storage
- Replacement of virtualization servers and backup components
The new data solution combines HPE Apollo 4200 Gen10 Plus servers, designed for healthcare data environments, with Qumulo software-defined storage.
The projects included upgrading the hospital’s network infrastructure, replacing virtualization servers, integrating with the Veeam backup system, and connecting to the hospital’s identity management (Active Directory). One of the main challenges was ensuring reliable backup tasks for virtual servers and fine-tuning recovery processes for outages.
To modernize storage, IXPERTA implemented Qumulo scale-out storage for unstructured data — ideal for hospitals and organizations needing to store large volumes of file or object data. This on-premises solution offers cloud-based reporting and monitoring through the Qumulo Nexus portal.
The full solution was deployed in 2023. Migration and implementation took four months and were completed without disruption to hospital operations.
Fast & High-Performance Backup Storage
Qumulo now serves as the hospital’s file storage for shared data across users and departments, as well as for file-based backups. Snapshots load in milliseconds, giving doctors instant access to critical patient information. Thanks to the on-premises design, data recovery is fast and does not interfere with hospital systems.
Key Technology Advantages
Ideal for healthcare
Efficient storage of departmental data, device images, and records. Data is compressed at creation, saving resources and avoiding additional compression overhead.
Scalable architecture
Using a scale-out approach, storage expands by adding servers, increasing both capacity and performance.
Cost-optimized solution
For large data volumes, on-premises storage is more cost-effective than cloud. Qumulo is hardware-agnostic, allowing customers to choose servers based on preference and optimize costs.
High availability
Continuous data availability, even if a server in the cluster fails.
Simple management
All-in-one installation, compatible with Windows, Unix, and Linux. Easy to manage, no advanced training required.
Security certification
Qumulo meets the highest security standards, certified by NIST FIPS 140-2, ensuring robust protection of sensitive patient data.
Key Figures
- 120 TB storage capacity
- Millisecond latency
- 5,000 / 6,000 MB/s throughput for read/write
- 7.5 PB Scalable up to
- 100% performance maintained during node or disk failures
Client Satisfaction
From the client’s perspective, this was a full replacement of the hospital’s data center — including both primary virtualization clusters and secondary storage. The new solution meets their needs for availability, security, and efficiency.
The hospital is now considering moving additional patient data (such as imaging) into the new storage system, unlocking its full potential.
Client Testimonial
“Transitioning to a modern data storage solution with IXPERTA has been a valuable step. We gained reliability, speed, security, and ease of management. Our medical teams now have instant access to critical patient data, enabling more efficient care. This is exactly what modern healthcare needs in the era of exploding data volumes.”
